School Council

At Trafalgar Community Infant School, we have a dedicated School Council which consists of two elected members from each Key Stage One class.

The School Council meets with the Co-Headteacher on a fortnightly basis to evaluate and improve our school. They are then responsible for communicating this to their peers, teacher and learning assistant back in class. School Council members each have their own badge and clipboard for collecting the views of their peers. Before and after each School Council meeting a circle time is dedicated to discussing agenda items in each classroom. School Council members use this forum to gather ideas and opinions and then feedback following the meetings. School Council members are also encouraged to report on decisions and deliver messages to the whole school during assemblies.

Last year the School Council designed safety posters to go up around the school to encourage children not to scoot on the playground. They wrote letters to families reminding them to drive carefully and park safely around the school. They also encouraged the children to vote on how they would like to celebrate World Book Day and they chose to come to school in pyjamas with their favourite story. They chose to raise money through holding a sponsored run for ‘Toilet twinning’ and wearing something ‘Blue for the Loo’. Classes voted for which country they wanted their toilets to be built, they chose school and family toilets in Malawi. They also conducted a health and safety walks with our Premises Officer Mr West.

There is a School Council noticeboard near the main reception area which displays photographs of the School Council representatives, minutes and agendas, and the date of the next meeting. We also display an action plan so that the children can view what is currently being acted upon.
